Functions of the Liver

  1. Breaks down hormones and drugs (such as alcohol)
  2. Breaks down dead/ damaged red blood cells
  3. Breaks down amino acids into ammonia (deamination)
  4. Breaks down toxins
  5. Makes urea
  6. Makes cholesterol
  7. Makes protein (including plasma proteins, such as fibrinogen)
  8. Converts glucose to glycogen
  9. Stores glycogen
  10. Maintains glucose concentration in blood
